- Follow some practices that will help reduce the risk of suicide in children
Child and teen suicide are on the rise in India, and it is becoming a matter of serious concern. To help prevent child suicide, there are certain steps that parents and teachers can take to reduce the risk of suicide in children.
1) Monitor Children’s Behavior
Even if your child doesn’t tell you anything, you should always keep an eye on them. Always talk to them about their mental health and always consult professionals if necessary. Always remember that actions speak louder than words. Always watch what your kids are going through in their lives. And if there’s any triggering behaviour you see, never ignore it.
2) Never Ignore Your Kids Complain or Mood Change
Most children do things that seem like drama and nothing else. But if your child has persistent mood swings and sadness, then something is serious. When you often hear them say, ‘I want to die’, ‘I don’t care anymore’, nothing in life matters, try to find the root cause of it. You should always talk to your kids and let them know that you are their first friend.
3) Understand them with Empathy
Empathy helps in generating trust. Children are very sensitive, especially teenagers. It is important that you try to be their friend and understand what they are saying. Don’t ignore what they have to say, otherwise, they will get defensive and stop sharing anything with you.
