Disability, Accessibility and Filmmaking: Anu at the Kriti Film Club’s Screening

“It’s time we normalise disability by referring to the disabled as ‘disabled’. I have been there and I know the need to be looked at as ‘normal’ is the highest then, which is also what speeds recovery. So while awareness needs to be developed where the disabled accept their problem the world has to accept the people with it.”

  • Anu Aggrawal, Director of Anu Aggarwal Foundation

Movies play an important role in one’s life and leave a huge impact. It is the film through which we take our message to the masses. In July, the Kriti Film Club, along with the Department of Special Education, SNDT Women’s University, held screenings of films that talked about disability, accessibility and filmmaking.

Since its inception in 2000, Kriti Film Club screened films on social issues such as human rights, social trends, etc.

AAF Director, Anu Agarwal was the special guest at the event. Where We Make Film by Dr Shweta Ghosh and I Didn’t See You There by Reed Davenport were screened. Filmmakers from the disabled community were present in the panel note.

The filmmakers shared their thought-provoking experiences on persons with disabilities. And talked about challenges, opportunities and victories.

Films play an important role in creating awareness about the life of people with disability. It also teaches how society can be more acceptable towards them and how they can support them to live a joyful life.

Anu shared her experience with the guests about her near-fatal accident and how she overcome it beautifully despite facing serious challenges in life. And now helping others to live their lives more confidently and happily.

She also emphasized that we should normalize the word disabled and need more awareness so that the people who are suffering can overcome their problems at the earliest.
