Mindful Practice for Difficult Emotions

Everyone feels a variety of emotions which can be good or bad, leaving a positive impact or a negative impact. The spectrum of human emotion ranges from euphoric feelings such as joy and happiness to more difficult emotions such as anger and grief.

But did you know that you can manage your emotions and you can do so by being emotionally aware? Most people find it difficult to be emotionally aware. With consistent practice, you can easily develop this.

Mindful coping strategies with Difficult Emotions

Mindful coping strategies can be helpful for dealing with difficult emotions. Here are a few tips:

1) Acknowledge and accept the emotion

You need to know that it is normal to have difficult feelings and it is okay to feel them. Trying to suppress or ignore difficult feelings can actually make them worse in the long run.

2)  Label the emotion

Feeling emotions like anger, or sadness. Labelling an emotion can help you better understand it and gain a sense of control over it.

3)  Observe the emotion

Notice how you feel the emotion in your body, where you feel it, and how it changes over time. Try looking at the emotions without judgement or try changing it to see how it really works.

4) Take deep breaths

Taking slow, deep breaths can help calm the body and mind, making it easier to cope with difficult emotions.

Mindfulness is the practice of being present and aware of the moment. By focusing on your breath or a task, you can help bring your attention away from difficult feelings and into the present moment.

6) Reframe your thoughts

Try to challenge and refute negative thoughts that may be fueling difficult feelings. Simply reframing your thoughts will make you feel much better.

7) Seek support

If your emotion is overwhelming and difficult to deal with, seek the help of a therapist, friend, or family member who can help and support you process it.
