2023 is at the door.

This new year brings mindfulness into your life because it has many benefits which include relieving episodic stress, treating heart diseases, lowering blood pressure, relieving chronic pain, improving sleep, etc. Setting mindful New Year’s resolutions will help get you started.

Here we bring you a step-by-step guide to setting a mindful New Year’s resolution.

1)    Choose a quiet place to meditate

You can start by finding a quiet place where you can relax and reflect on your goals for the coming year. Whatever area you choose for meditation, make sure it is comfortable and cosy, where you can get fresh air.

Do some mindful practices before setting New Year’s resolutions. Breathing exercises are best for beginners. Close your eyes, open your arms and focus on your breathing for at least five minutes.

2)    Know what you want

Setting new year’s resolutions become easier to set if you know what you want to tackle or what area of your life you want to improve. Spend some time considering what you most want.  Whether you want to start the new year with a special purpose. Like nourishing your body, and developing a sense of health, vigour and power. Whatever your apparent motives may be, try to know and understand them.

You can work on this for five to fifteen minutes. Make sure your resolution is clear, repeat it in your head several times or note it down in your journal.

3)    Remember your resolution

It is easy to forget resolutions once set. But by verbally repeating your set resolution, you can reinforce your aspirations for the coming year.

You can use other methods to remember it like writing it in a journal and sticking a note where you always see it. You can even share it with your close ones so that they can remind you of it.

4)    Develop patience & compassion

Be kind to yourself.

Regardless of whether you set a specific goal to start this new year with, there will always be days when you find yourself relaxing and not following your set routine. Accept it with all humanity and remember that you show kindness and compassion to yourself before you share it with others.

Summary

After you’ve outlined your goals for the new year, observe any conflicting thoughts that may pop into your head. It can sometimes be difficult to stick to the resolutions you set. But any internal resistance or conflicting desires should be noticed and attended to with kindness and curiosity.

Remember that your thoughts and feelings can change quickly, regardless of any internal conflicts. It is okay that your past feelings don’t match your feelings now. Tune back into your heart’s deepest desires, to follow the resolution despite the vagaries of your mind.
